The competition against another candidate with a better qualification is fierce. An interview is the key to be given the opportunity for your success, so you need to discover how to sell yourself before meeting with the prospective employer.

  • Arrive on Time (or better still 10 minutes early).
  • Research the Company and its business.
  • Keep in touch with current events – read the previous day’s newspaper.
  • Be ready to talk about any aspect of your career, your degree, your hobbies and interests.
  • Dress smartly and act positively.
  • Introduce yourself to the person and remember the interviewer’s name!
  • Listen carefully to the questions and answer questions directly.
  • Allow the interviewer to control the interview.
  • Prepare questions prior to the interview that you would like to ask. Do not ask questions about pay, pension funds or parking. These are logistical details that can be discussed at the final stages.
  • Set your mind to why you can be the best candidate for the job, and explain what you can do.
  • If you do not know an answer, then say so.
  • If you are interested in the job tell the interviewer.
  • Attempt to “close” the interview.  At the end of an interview to try to find out how the interviewer thought it went and whether they have any reservations regarding your application as this is the best time to counter them.
